Resistance of materials (RDM) and dimensioning Level 1 – basic applications

Understand the parameters required for structural design and apply the approach to simple cases.

Course Overview

Learning Objectives

  • Build a calculation model of the element to be studied
  • Research design quantities
  • Evaluate the element’s serviceability using criteria

Teaching Methods

  • Teaching method alternating theory and practice through case studies or tutorials.

Targeted Skills

  • Evaluate the strength of a structure by applying the concepts of RDM.
  • Identify the approach for successfully designing a structure.

Means Assessment

  • Throughout the training, trainees complete course application exercises, which are reviewed with the instructor.
  • A final assessment quiz is used to assess learning.

Instructor Profile

  • Expert technical trainer in the field of mechanics, working on consulting and technical assistance assignments in companies.

Personnel concerned

  • Technical agents, design office technicians, or maintenance department technicians.

Prerequisites

  • Participants must master the mathematical concepts listed in the CM01 “Concepts” course syllabus. “Basic Mechanics.” A positioning quiz is offered to the trainee.

Training Program

  • Introduction to fundamental concepts in RDM (tensile curve, stress, etc.).
  • Geometric characteristics of sections. Consistency of units.
  • Case study: characterization of a profile.
  • Calculation of forces.
  • Principle of equilibrium.
  • Case study: equilibrium of a mechanical system.
  • Calculation of the strength of parts subjected to tension.
  • Application to the treatment of articulated systems (trusses, etc.).
  • Calculation of the strength of parts subjected to shear.
  • Calculation of the strength of parts subjected to bending.
  • Calculation of the strength of parts subjected to torsion.
  • Static strength of weld beads: design principles and criteria.
  • Application: static design of welded assemblies.

Trainees should bring a calculator.
