Mechanical applications of plastics and composites

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the different plastics and composites and their applications
  • State the specificities, advantages, and disadvantages of plastic and composite materials
  • State the different processing processes, as well as their advantages and limitations
  • Be able to propose a study of replacing parts currently made of metal with plastic or composite parts (advantages/disadvantages).

  • Be a proactive force in the initiation of the feasibility of plastic and composite parts. Composites

  • Mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of different families of polymers and composites.
  • Plastic molding techniques: processes.
  • Injection molding: design, tooling, applications, examples.
  • Molding techniques for composite materials.
  • Application examples (gears, automotive parts, pumps, valves, transmission shafts, tanks and pipes, etc.).
  • Advantages and disadvantages compared to other types of materials.
